I nearly gave up once—here’s why I didn’t.

Not long ago, I found myself staring at the chaos of paperwork, unpaid invoices, and a growing to-do list. Not for a client—this time, it was my own home and business. Life had shifted under our feet—my husband’s retrenchment left me the sole breadwinner, and G-Whiz had to become more than just a passion. It had to work.

So I rolled up my sleeves, took a breath, and did what I do best: I made a plan.

That same mindset is what I now bring to small service business owners across South Africa—helping them go from overwhelmed and reactive to clear, confident, and in control of their numbers.

Because here’s the thing: it’s not about how small your business is or how “behind” you think you are. I’ve worked with clients who’ve been in business for years, still creating invoices in Word or Canva, tracking payments manually, and guessing what their actual profit is. The stress builds slowly—until one day you realise your books are running you, not the other way around.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

This month’s win
I recently helped a small digital marketing business switch from spreadsheets and scattered invoices to a full QuickBooks Online setup. They now send recurring invoices with reminders, can see who owes them money at a glance, and—this is my favourite part—they actually understand their own financial reports. The relief in their voice was everything.

This month’s tip
If you're using QuickBooks Online, turn on custom transaction numbers. It might seem like a small detail, but when you need to follow up on a payment or troubleshoot a bank match, it saves time and frustration. These little habits build the foundation for smooth, scalable systems.

Hooked on Fishing – And Finding Balance
On Saturday, 29 March 2025, my family and I packed our fishing gear, snacks, and a whole lot of stress and headed to the Vaal River for a much-needed escape. Life has been overwhelming lately, and between work, family responsibilities, and personal challenges, we were all running on empty. It was time to step away from the everyday hustle and just breathe.

The river greeted us with its gentle ripples, the air was filled with the calls of birds swooping low over the water, and the warm South African sun worked its magic, easing away the tension we had all been carrying. We set up our rods, cast our lines, and let time slow down. There’s something about fishing that forces you to be present—watching the water, feeling the slight tug of the line, and waiting patiently for that exciting moment when a fish bites.

After a while, the first big moment arrived—my daughter, with determination in her eyes, reeled in the first catch of the day! And not just any fish, but the biggest one we caught. The joy on her face was priceless, and in that moment, all the stress and exhaustion melted away. She was thrilled, and by the end of the day, she was completely hooked—on fishing and on the simple joy of slowing down.

We ended up catching three fish in total, but more than that, we caught something even more valuable: rest, laughter, and the reminder that life isn’t just about pushing forward—it’s also about pausing to enjoy the moments that truly matter.
